Hey there, The only thing that really is a hindrance for me when recording, and always has been , is getting really good guitar tones. Tried plugins, tried pod like stuff, tried micing, all suck for me.....I wish I could just mic things b/c I have a great tone, but it just isn't practical in a basement bedroom with wife and kid.....opportunities are very slim, and when I do I'm in the same room, so it's so loud!!!! Last night I grabbed an old used Marshall JMP-1 Pre and it sounds fantastic.... I have it for a month to decide.....anyone use one? love it? hate it? warnings? it's $450

I've been using a JMP1 preamp as part of my live rig for years and haven't found an alternative set up that gives me the same range of sounds - from Nile Rodgers to EVH. The four pre amp types each have their own distinct character. I've used the JMP1 speaker emulated out for recording in the studio and got some good sounds. But for my own home recording, I'm happy with the sounds I can get from amp plug-ins such as Amplitude 3 or Guitar Rig 4. The only downside to the JMP1 is that it can be noisy on high gain settings. Yes, a great piece of gear, I bought mine over ten years ago and still cherish it. But, there's great news... the man behind the making of the JMP-1, Mike Scuffham, has launched a superb guitar preamp VST plugin: S-Gear. I bought it as soon as I tried the demo. Highly recommended:
One of my favorite guitar tones creator... I've had Triaxis, Piranha, a Peavey 1RU pre-amp, Diezel VH4, Recto, Stiletto, and various other amps in my studio and my custom handmade JCM800 and my JMP-1 are still my favorite, followed by one distortion on the Triaxis (I don't remember the channel, but the it's supposed to be the MKIV one) and the Diezel VH4. Didn't know about this plugin! I'll check it out.

JMP1 works well in both recordings and live setups. Despite my frequent use of modeling preamps (VOX and Line6 varieties) plugins have never worked for me. I use assorted preamps, amps thru a dummy load and a cabinet simulator.

What convos are you using and what you using to "play" the convos? I spend the afternoon messing around with ReValve MkIII and it is AMAZING! The best amp sim (for heavy tones) so far!
