Hi guys, I notice I'm definitely in the minority, being an "indie" singer/songwriter/instrumentalist... I like all kinds of music but prefer to write more "indie"-ish stuff... I use the term loosely, because it's immediately discounted as "hipster bullshit" (I'd have to disagree)... but yeah, I notice a lot of people using Reaper tend to make metal/rock stuff... I'd love to hear from anyone who makes lesser-known genres/moods/textures with Reaper... here are just a few of my major influences... I lean toward the ambient/folk/mellow side of things, usually. anything post rock (Album Leaf, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Tristeza, Hammock, etc) anything dreampop-ish or shoegaze (Daughter, Audrey, Depreciation Guild, MBV, etc) "twinkly" emo stuff (American Football, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc) Kings of Convenience Nada Surf Ida L'Altra Azure Ray Antlers Raveonettes Allo Darlin History of Apple Pie Ephemera Elliott Smith Ingrid Michaelson Rilo Kiley / Jenny Lewis Magnetic Fields / Stephin Merritt Notwist Innocence Mission Warpaint Beach House Wye Oak Porches Frankie Cosmos etc... thanks for chiming in, guys! I'd love to give your music a listen, and/or discuss lo-fi recording techniques/mixing/mastering (and not mastering at all), etc... :)
It's a little bit like asking what style of novel you write with a particular brand of pen or word processor :) I mix indie, metal (in all its flavours) rock, folk, choral, instrumental, spoken word ...in fact everything up to and including bat calls and birdsong. Yeah, I know certain genres have particular production styles and processes where the workflow is suited to certain workstations, but REAPER is pretty well suited to nearly all audio and most MIDI work. Or did I misunderstand the question and you're just after like-minded souls to discourse with? ;) >

Love punk, too. :) Born and raised on hardcore and melodic, 90s punk. Yeah, just looking to check out some new music, see what you guys are doing, talk shop, etc.
At one time, 'indie' meant something else...independent labels and bands (free from commercial controls); a sort of ethos inolving people releasing their own music, working out their own tours, etc., which encompassed independent punk, independent rock, independent hip-hop, independent country, etc. From what I can tell, these days 'indie' is a satellite genre of commercial pop, which seems odd to me.
I understand your thoughts, brainwreck, but I'd have to disagree. Indie still means independently-released and DIY... but also, it could mean a certain all-encompassing "sound"... all of these bands could be considered as having an indie "sound" (though sounding much different).. but none are commercially successful: The Antlers, Ida, J. Tillman, History of Apple Pie, Cemeteries, Frankie Cosmos, Audrey, Entertainment for the Braindead, Blind Pilot, The Go Find, etc.
Ok, let's not talk about when punk "died"... how about sharing you guys' indie/folk/less-popular-genre (but still "alternative") recordings, yeah? Sweet.
I must be an older f*^! than I thought. I still listen to stuff like Pavement, Guided By Voices, The Fall, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Archers of Loaf, The Flaming Lips, yadda... Listened to a tune by History of Apple Pie. Reminded me of The Breeders from the 90's.
